More than 68,000 migrants processed under migration plan

31 July 2026

Dr. Rebecca Walker (Research Associate, African Centre for Migration & Society) joined Cape Talk’s Africa Melane to discuss the government’s latest update on its Five-Point Plan on Migration Management.

“We need to be clear that the briefing given by the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration was to give an update on deportations, arrests, but none of those numbers tell us exactly about due process, and whether underlying drivers have been addressed at all.”

“We are hearing the same thing week on week from government, that migration is a crisis; which it is not. We do not have evidence that South Africa is facing a crisis of influx of migration, and how the removal of migrants fixes unemployment and other challenges faced in South Africa.”
